State seeking input for Stocked Trout Management Plan

A statewide angler survey conducted by DGIF in 2009 indicated that, relative to other anglers, trout anglers in Virginia are generally less satisfied with their fishing. To address the complex management challenges and issues related to producing desirable fishing experiences for stocked trout, DGIF and Virginia Tech’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation are developing a statewide Stocked Trout Management Plan (http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/trout/management-plan/). This plan, which will be similar in scope and purpose to the Virginia White-tailed Deer Management and Black Bear Management plans, will be designed to provide broad guidance on policies for addressing management challenges. It will also address the following questions:

  •  How many stocked trout do anglers catch and harvest?
  • Why are trout license sales declining?
  • What can be done to improve angler satisfaction with stocked trout fishing and management in Virginia?

The first step is identifying the issues with stocked trout fishing and management in Virginia. Therefore, DGIF will be holding eight public input meetings in the next month:
