TU Chapters supports Camp Fantastic

Camp Fantastic is a special camp for kids with cancer. It is held annually at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center just outside of Front Royal. This August marked the 30th year the camp has been held, and according to Mike Swauger, President of the Northern Shenandoah Chapter of Trout Unlimited, it is at least the 13th year TU has been involved.

Numerous groups and organizations roll out the red carpet for the campers and plan activities to ensure that they can spend a week just being kids. TU members usually spend one day during the week at camp. In the morning, groups of campers meet the TU members at the creek to conduct stream studies. While the creek does have its share of stoneflies and mayflies, nothing causes more excitement than catching a crawdad or sculpin. After lunch, TU members help the campers with fishing on the pond located at the Center. In addition to the annual August Camp, the 4-H Center hosts several weekend events for the campers and their families throughout the year. TU members from both the Northern Shenandoah and Rapidan Chapters usually help at these events.
